Modernization of opioid analgesic management in the emergency department leading to a balanced use of innovations in health care

Intravenous morphine titration is an analgesic procedure that revolutionized the management of severe pain in postoperative and emergency medicine in the early 2000s. It is an effective and safe technique, including in case of high patient flow, but it is now challenged for many reasons. Proposing an alternative to this gold standard treatment implies keeping its advantages (pharmacological efficacy, safety of administration, widespread use in target pathologies and conditions, etc.), and considering a sustainable alternative from a medico-economic perspective. Finally, the implementation of this alternative cannot be successful without prior analysis of the area concerned. This presentation will explain the modern issues of morphine titration in the emergency department, the current drug developments including in healthy volunteers, and the prospective epidemiological methodologies at bedside that allow to understand the new factors associated with this prescription. Opioid rationalization in the emergency department is at the forefront of contemporary research in acute pain area, and requires a polymorphous approach, as shown by the recent publications of Virginie Eve Lvovschi who joined the laboratory recently.
