Title: Sleep: An Athlete’s Best Ally? Sleep Assessment to Improve Performance and Reduce the Risk of Injury
Speaker : Mathias Goldberg, PhD PT and Sports Physical Therapist
Presentation: We spend a third of our lives sleeping, and yet sleep has never been so short, disrupted, or neglected. Sleep is central to many essential functions of the human body and plays a crucial role in physiological and psychological recovery, memory consolidation and learning, and the regulation of pain and emotions. All of these functions are vital for athletes, yet their sleep has long been overlooked. The goal of this presentation is therefore to provide an overview of athletes’ sleep patterns (female vs. male, professional vs. amateur, team sports vs. individual sports) and to present educational and practical strategies for improving it. Optimizing sleep appears to be a key factor in daily well-being, but it could also be a determining factor in improving on-field performance and reducing the risk of injury among athletes.
