Motivational Interviewing and Medication Adherence

A recent meta-analysis compared 771 interventional studies aiming to improve medication adherence. The results showed that improvement was more readily obtained by habit-based and behavioral-based interventions, compared to cognitive approaches. Among behavioral-based interventions, motivational interviewing (MI) appears to be an interesting approach. MI is a ‘‘client-centered directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence’’. The effectiveness of MI was primarily demonstrated in addictology and particularly in alcohol and drug dependence. In recent years, MI has been widely developed to promote health behavior change, including medication adherence. We conducted a systematic review to describe the use of MI on patient’s medication adherence, using randomized and controlled design studies, in several chronic diseases.
