This PhD project aims to explore how communities in the Middle Juruá Region (MJR) in the Brazilian Amazon perceive the risk of public health emergencies caused by infectious diseases and the resources they dispose to respond to such emergencies, considering the intersections between human, animal and environmental health using a One Health (OH) approach. The project is part of the larger research project entitled ECO-Amazon, developed by the Pôle de Psychologie Social/Lyon2 in partnership with Instituto Juruá, funded by ANR. While the region is highly vulnerable to emerging infectious diseases compounded by insufficient health services, it boasts a strong social organization that we identify as a key resource to leverage for improving community health. Building on these experiences, this research employs a community-based approach to investigate social representations of the three health, their perception of healthcare access, and their trust in science and health systems in responding to future emergencies. Data collection methods will include semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and participant observation and will be analyzed following the reflexive thematic analysis. Communities’ members will be invited to actively engage in all stages of the research. Expected results include an enhanced understanding of the psychosocial and institutional dimensions of public health preparedness at the community level and strengthened international collaboration in the OH field.
